vietnamise/French Drip Coffee Maker
I have used these things many times before, they make a more than fantastic cup of coffee,, they make a better cup of coffee then Starbucks,, and they're small and lite enough for backpacking or for placing in a silver wear tray.

okay.
living in a southern town, i thought amazon was my only choice when it came to a phin filter. definitely works okay, and is fairly sturdy (i do not understand what other reviews were talking about-- handles? weird.), but go figure i found a better one at the same price at the one asian market in my town. this one has some definite disadvantages-- it's just a little on the small side, and the threaded area of the screw-down filter is very short. in fact, if not slightly under-loaded or not completely dry before filling, it just will not screw down the proper amount. not bad for the money, but not great either.

Have Vietnamese cafe sua da at home
I ordered this filter because it was the cheapest, and I've heard that quality and functionality is pretty much the same on all Vietnamese coffee filters. Having used mine a couple times, I can believe that. This filter has the screw-style insert, which I found to work well. It's not hard to find the right amount of pressure. Just check how quickly the water level is going down inside the filter, and how quickly the drops are falling from the bottom. You want it all to filter through in about 5 minutes. If you're wondering how difficult it is to make something that actually tastes like cafe sua da, it isn't very difficult at all. By only my second attempt, I was drinking something that tasted pretty much exactly like cafe sua da from my favorite local Vietnamese restaurant. Just use ground coffee with chicory (I used French Market because I couldn't find the recommended Cafe Du Monde near my house) and sweetened condensed milk. I was surprised how easy it was; it tastes so different from drip-style brewed coffee. My only complaint is that the little lid doesn't seem to go on completely. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not, but it doesn't really affect the brewing either way.

Works like a charm
If you have ever tasted the results of this little filter atop a glass that produced "Viet/Thai" coffee with condensed milk (hot or cold), you will have judged for yourself whether this is for you. You can also make a straight expresso. The secret is in the beans, not the device. This one cup/glass filter works well, but the taste is up to you and the beans you choose.

Only for Emergencies
Does not keep contents warm. Need to heat liquids and keeo hot in order for proper brew. Use as last resort

Inconsistent brew times.
Picked up a couple of these to make iced coffee. Some some work perfectly. Others take forever. There's inconsistency of craftsmanship here that's probably authentic. For the price though, it's what I'd expect and they make a great cup.
